Basilique Saint Sernin: 900 Years of History

The Basilique Sait Sernin is located in Toulouse, France; it is an extraordinary church which is linked with the Capitole Square by Taur Street and is commemorating 900 years of history. The church is also known with the name of Basilique Saint Saturnin, who was a Christian martyr of the year 250 A.D. Relics are stored in the tomb of this man which is inside the church.

The church was planed to be constructed during the eleventh century, remodeling an old little church which was constructed in the fifth century. After its construction, it was usually full of parishioners. Nevertheless, this church was very small for the worshipers and that is why it was reconstructed into a bigger church. The majority of those worshipers were pilgrims en route to Saint Jacques de Compostella or people who came to the church just to adore the relics of Saint Saturnin.

The design of the church is based on the gothic and renaissance art; however, the original design has suffered several changes and not all of them were helpful; in fact, the last restoration made by Viollet le Duc became the most disastrous. The church was built with a mixture of the Roman, gothic and renaissance art and it is the largest Romanesque church known around the world. It was upgraded from church to basilica in 1778.
