Jean Girel Exhibits at the Faience Museum in Sarreguemines

Jean Girel’s ceramics are poly-morphic and are often made to look like various plants, reptiles, stones, and sea-shells. The “Nature of Ceramics, Ceramics of Nature” exhibit at the Faience Museum in Sarreguemines takes these extraordinary pieces and examines how they relate their surroundings and how they inspire the imagination.

It is appropriate that this ceramics exhibition should be held at the Faience Museum in Sarreguemines. The reputation of Sarreguemines faience is now well established. In two centuries the small family business, which was created during the Revolution, has come a long way. The numerous owners of these gay and colurful pieces are scattered all over the world.

Paul Utzschneider and Paul de Geiger, two born leaders, propelled this small town to the forefront of the faience industry. From the 19th century onwards, Sarreguemines produced and sold all over the world a vast collection of faience vases, flowerpot holders, and decorative panels for walls and fireplaces. This museum celebrates the history of this craftsmanship, and in turn, the history of the city itself.
