Saint-Germain-en-Laye
France, officially the French Republic, is a country whose metropolitan territory is located in Western Europe and comprises various overseas islands and territories which are located in other regions. Saint-Germain-en-Laye is a commune in the western suburbs of Paris in France. It is located 19.1 kilometers from the center of Paris. The inhabitants of the commune are called Saint-Germanois. It is a sous-prefecture of the Yvelines department, being the seat of the Arrondissement of Saint-Germain-en-Laye. Because it includes the National Forest of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, it covers approximately 48 square kilometers, making it the largest commune in Yvelines. It occupies a large loop of the Seine. Saint-Germain-en-Laye lies at one of western terminus of the line A of the RER, Reseau Express Regional. Yvelines is a French department in the region of Ile-de-France. Yvelines was created from the western part of the no longer existing department of Seine-et-Oise on January 1, 1968 in accordance with a law passed on January 10, 1964. Saint-Germain-en-Laye was founded in 1020 when King Robert the Pious founded a convent on the site of the present Church of Saint-Germain. It is at an altitude of 22 to 107 meters. Its land area is 48.27 square kilometers and population as of July 1, 2004 estimated 41,400. Density of the commune in 2004 was 858 per square kilometers. Saint-Germain-en-Laye is served by Saint-Germain-en-Laye station on Paris RER line A. Saint-Germain-en-Laye is also served by Acheres, Grand Cormier station on Paris RER line A and on the Transilien Paris Saint Lazare suburban rail line. This station is located in the middle of the Forest of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, far away from the urbanized part of the commune. Saint-Germain-en-Laye, justifiably so, enjoys a very positive reputation with worldwide travelers, and is one of the most visited place. It is also said the place of best geographical environment and can trace its origins back to prehistoric times.
