Saintes




France, officially the French Republic, is a country whose metropolitan territory is located in Western Europe and comprises various overseas islands and territories which are located in other regions. Saintes is a town and commune in France, in the Charente-Maritime department, of which it is a sous-prefecture. Saintes was the capital of the former province of Saintonge. It was the scene of the second phase of the Saintonge War, in 1242, when the army of Hugh X was besieged by that of Louis IX and Alphonse of Poitiers. Charente-Maritime is a department on the west coast of France named after the Charente River. Charente-Inferieure was one of the 83 original departments created during the French Revolution on March 4, 1790. Saintes is located at a height of 2 to 81 meters. It has a land area of 45.55 square kilometers and population as of 1999 was 25,595 with density of 562 per square kilometers. Saintes, due to its many historic events and places it has been one of the favorite destinations of visitors. It enjoys a very positive reputation with worldwide travelers.
