Perigueux
France, officially the French Republic, is a country whose metropolitan territory is located in Western Europe and comprises various overseas islands and territories which are located in other regions. Metropolitan France extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea, and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. At 674,843 square kilometres, France is the world's 40th-largest country after Myanmar. France is a member of The European Union and Paris is the capital of this nation. The sole official language of France is French. Since prehistoric times, France has been a crossroads of trade, migrations, and invasions. The name Perigueux comes from the Petrocorii, the Gallic people that embraced the area even before the Roman conquest. Perigueux was their capital city. Perigueux is a commune of France, prefecture of the Dordogne departement and the capital of the Perigord area in the Aquitaine region. It is the seat of a Roman Catholic diocese. It is at the altitude 75 metres to 189 metres. Its land area is 9.82 square kilometres, population and density in the year 1999 were 30,193 and 3,075 per square kilomtres. The diocese comprises the department of Dordogne and is suffragan to the Archbishopric of Bordeaux. By the Concordat of 1801, the dioceses of Perigueux and Sarlat were united to the see of Angouleme. In 1821, Perigueux was again the seat of a bishopric which united the former dioceses of Perigueux and Sarlat, excepting 60 parishes given to Agen and Angouleme and 49 parishes which had once belonged to Limoges, Cahors and Tulle. There are an amphitheater and a temple of a Gallic goddess. A luxurious Roman villa, called the Domus of Vesunna, built around a garden courtyard surrounded by a colonnaded perisink and the cathedral Saint-Front was built after 1120 and restored in the 19th century. Perigueux, justifiably so, enjoys a very positive reputation with worldwide travelers, and is one of the most visited place. It is also said the place of best geographical environment and can trace its origin back to prehistoric times.
