Montbeliard




France, officially the French Republic, is a country whose metropolitan territory is located in Western Europe and comprises various overseas islands and territories which are located in other regions. Montbeliard is a commune in the Doubs department of the Franche-Comte region, in eastern France. It is one of the two sous-prefectures of the department. The population as of 1999 was 27,570. Its land area is 15.01 per square kilometers. Mentioned first in 985 as Mons Beliardae, it became a county of the Holy Roman Empire in the 11th century. In 1397 Mompelgard passed by marriage to the counts of Wurttemberg. In 1524, 10 years earlier than in Wurttemberg, Count Ulrich and reformer William Farel made Mompelgard Protestant. From 1598 to 1608, the architect Heinrich Schickhardt build several landmarks of the city, like St. Martin, a castle, a bridge, a college and several hotels.
 
Doubs is a departement in eastern France named after the Doubs River. After the French Revolution, it was briefly incorporated into the Rauracian Republic, and in 1793 Mompelgard was annexed to France. As a consequence of the former rule under the dukes of Wurttemberg, it has been for centuries one of the few Protestant enclaves in France. The main manufacturing plant of Peugeot is partly located in Montbeliard and the industrialist Peugeot family is a protestant family from the vicinity of Montbeliard. Montbeliard is twinned with Ludwigsburg, Germany, the site of the castles of Wurttemberg. Montbeliard due its various places of interest is one of the most visited places. Montbeliard is one of the most visited countries. It is also said the place of best geographical environment and can trace its origins back to prehistoric times.
