Lorient
France, officially the French Republic, is a country whose metropolitan territory is located in Western Europe and comprises various overseas islands and territories which are located in other regions. Metropolitan France extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea, and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. At 674,843 square kilometres, France is the world's 40th-largest country after Myanmar. France is a member of The European Union and Paris is the capital of this nation. The sole official language of France is French. Since prehistoric times, France has been a crossroads of trade, migrations, and invasions. Lorient, or L'Orient, is a community and a seaport in the Morbihan department, of Brittany. The population of the city is 61,844 and that of the urban area is 186,144. At the beginning of the 17th century, merchants who were trading with India had recognized warehouses in Port-Louis. They later built additional warehouses across the bay in 1628, at the location which became known as L'Orient. Most of the city was destroyed during World War II and today's Lorient reflects an architectural fashion of the 1950s. Geographically Lorient is situated on the south coast of Brittany on the Atlantic Ocean. The rivers Scorff and Blavet enter the Atlantic Ocean at Lorient. The city has a major fishing port, Porte de Peche, at Keroman and the docks area at Kergroise handle large passenger and cargo ships. Tourism plays a significant part in the city’s economy and there are numerous large yachting marinas around the bay. The annual Festival Interceltique de Lorient was founded in Lorient in the year 1971 and attracts large numbers of tourists to the area every summer. It was also a former base of the French Navy but these links have now disappeared. However, many vital former naval buildings remain around the harbor. A city known for its historic myths and traditions, scenic beauty, luxurious hotels and cottages, Lorient is one of the favorite holiday destinations for most of the vacation lovers.
