Le Kremlin-Bicetre
France, officially the French Republic, is a country whose metropolitan territory is located in Western Europe and comprises various overseas islands and territories which are located in other regions. Metropolitan France extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. At 674,843 square kilometers, France is the world's 40th-largest country after Myanmar. It is a member of the European Union and Paris is the capital of this nation.
Le Kremlin-Bicetre is one of most popular destinations in France, and is well known for the quantity of cultural related attractions and monuments that the city has embraced. It is basically a commune in the southern suburbs of Paris and is geographically located only 4.5 kilometers from the center of Paris. It is also one of the most densely populated municipalities in Europe. The origin of the name Le Kremlin-Bicetre is quite curious, having roots both in Russia and England. Le Kremlin-Bicetre was originally a hamlet called Bicetre and located within the commune of Gentilly. The name Bicetre comes from the manor built there by John of Pontoise, Bishop of Winchester from England, in the end of the 13th century. The name of this manor of Winchester was ruined into Vinchestre, then Bichestre, and eventually Bicetre. Le Kremlin-Bicetre is most famous as the location of the Bicetre Hospital, where Superintendent Philippe Pinel is regarded to be the first to introduce human methods into the treatment of the mentally ill, in 1793. This hospital was built several centuries later on the ruins of the manor. In 1813, the hospital acted as a major reception point for evacuated casualties of the Grand Army from Napoleon's invasion of Russia. The veterans of the invasion of Russia used to gather in a tavern located near the hospital. This tavern was soon renamed as Au sergent du Kremlin which means at the sergeant of the Kremlin. Presently, Le Kremlin-Bicetre experiences a sharp social, economic and population growth derivative of the strategic position of the locality and the high level of well-being and quality of life that is enjoyed with respect to other places of France. This fact has consolidated along with other adjacent municipalities, as a great alternative for residence.
