Le Havre
France, officially the French Republic, is a country whose metropolitan territory is located in Western Europe and comprises various overseas islands and territories which are located in other regions. Metropolitan France extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea, and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. At 674,843 square kilometres, France is the world's 40th-largest country after Myanmar. France is a member of The European Union and Paris is the capital of this nation. Le Havre is a city in Normandy, northern France, on the English Channel, at the mouth of the Seine. Its population at the 1999 census was recorded at 190,905 inhabitants and 186,700 inhabitants in February 2004 estimates. The city was established in 1517, when it was named as Franciscopolis after Francis I of France, and subsequently named Le Havre-de-Grace. Its construction was ordered to substitute the ancient harbours of Honfleur and Harfleur whose utility decreased because of silting. The history of the city is linked to its harbour. Le Havre was the port-of-call for French ocean liners making the transatlantic crossing. It is known as La Porte Oceane and is the biggest city in Normandy before Rouen. It is the second largest export port in France. It has been classified as a World Heritage Site since July 2005. The city has one university and a strong sporting heritage and the oldest professional association football club in France. Le Havre is a commune and a sous-prefecture of the Seine-Maritime department. The current mayor of Le Havre is Antoine Rufenacht. It is bordered by the towns of Montivilliers, Harfleur, Gonfreville-l'Orcher. Le Havre is also known as the town of best geographical environment and has traced its origins back to prehistoric times. Today, one can also learn about its history, from its earliest times and can also enjoy its natural beauty concealed by the beautiful landscapes.
