Evreux
Evreux is one of most popular destinations in France, and is well known for the quantity of cultural related attractions and monuments. It is a commune of Normandy in the Eure department of which it is the capital. The name Evreux originates from the Gallic tribe of Eburovices. Evreux is located at an altitude of 58 to 146 meters with a total land area of 26.45 square kilometers, population of 51,198 according to the 1999 census and density of 1,936 inhabitants per square kilometer. The inhabitants of Exreux are called as Ebroicien.
The first family of the counts of Evreux, which is known was descended from an illegitimate son of Richard I, duke of Normandy, and became extinct in the male line with the death of Count William in 1118. Later, in 1427 the countship of Evreux was bestowed by King Charles VII on Sir John Stuart of Darnley, the commander of his Scottish bodyguard, who in 1423 received the seigniory of Aubigny and in February 1427 was granted the right to quarter the royal arms of France for his victories over the English. After many years, Evreux was annexed to France on the extinction of the La Tour d'Auvergne family in 1802. It was greatly damaged during the World War II, and most of its center was reconstructed. The nearby Evreux -Fauville air base was used as the United States air force until 1967, and then by the French Air Force. Evreux has buildings in a wide range of styles that include neoclassical, modernist, noucentrista and simply eclectic. It is the seat of a bishop, and its cathedral is one of the largest and finest in France. Part of the lower portion of the nave dates from the 11th century; the west facade with its two ungainly towers is, for the most part, the work of the late Renaissance, and a range of styles of the prevailing period are represented in the rest of the church. The episcopal palace, a building of the 15th century, borders the south side of the cathedral. An interesting belfry, facing the handsome modern town hall, also dates from the 15th century. Evreux, justifiably so, enjoys a very positive reputation with worldwide travelers, and is one of the most visited place. It is also said the place of best geographical environment and can trace its origin back to prehistoric times.
