Etampes

France, officially the French Republic, is a country whose metropolitan territory is located in Western Europe and comprises various overseas islands and territories which are located in other regions. Metropolitan France extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. At 674,843 square kilometers, France is the world's 40th-largest country after Myanmar. It is a member of the European Union and Paris is the capital of this nation.

Etampes is one of most popular destinations in France, and is well known for the quantity of cultural related attractions and monuments. It is a commune in the metropolitan area of Paris. It is located almost 48.1 kilometers to the southwest direction from the center of Paris. Etampes is has sub-prefecture of the Essonne department, being the seat of the Arrondissement of Etampes.

Etampes is located at an altitude of 66 to 156 meters with a land area of 40.92 square kilometers and population of 21,839 according to the 1999 census. Along with the adjacent communes of Morigny-Champigny and Brieres-les-Scelles, Etampes forms an urban area of 26,604 inhabitants. This urban area is a satellite city of Paris.
According to precious archeological findings, it can be affirmed that Etampes was first populated during the beginning of the 7th century and in the early Middle Ages belonged to the crown domain. During the Middle Ages, it was the scene of several councils, the most notable of which took place in 1130 and resulted in the recognition of Innocent II as the justifiable pope. In 1652, during the war of the Fronde it suffered severely at the hands of the royal troops under Turenne.

In spite of the intense urbanization that is undergoing in Etampes, the commune still accounts with natural, few memorials that include neoclassical, modernist, noucentrista and simply eclectic buildings. A fine view of Etampes is obtained from the Tour Guinette, a ruined keep built by Louis VI in the 12th century on a prominence on the other side of the railway. The civil buildings offer little interest, but two houses named after Anne de Pisseleu and Diane de Poitiers are charming examples of renaissance architecture.

Etampes, justifiably so, enjoys a very positive reputation with worldwide travelers, and is one of the most visited places. It is also said the place of best geographical environment and can trace its origin back to prehistoric times.
