Echirolles
France, officially the French Republic, is a country whose metropolitan territory is located in Western Europe and comprises various overseas islands and territories which are located in other regions. Metropolitan France extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea, and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. At 674,843 square kilometres, France is the world's 40th-largest country after Myanmar. France is a member of The European Union and Paris is the capital of this nation. The sole official language of France is French. Since prehistoric times, France has been a crossroads of trade, migrations, and invasions. Echirolles is an Arpitan town in the department of Isere and the Rhone-Alpes region of France. It is the second largest suburban area in the city of Grenoble and is on the southern corner. In the 1999 census, Echirolles had a population of 32,806 inhabitants and its inhabitants are known as the Echirollois. Echirolles is a former industrial village, where the majority of its inhabitants worked in the viscose factories. A fabric was invented in Echirolles in 1884 by the French scientist, Hilaire de Chardonnet. He was the inventor of the first artificial textile fiber before becoming well known all over the world. The process for manufacturing viscose was later patented by three British scientists, Charles Frederick Cross, Edward John Bevan and Clayton Beadle in 1891. Isere is a department in the eastern corner of France and is named after Isere River. It is one of the 83 departments built at the time of the French Revolution on March 4, 1790. It was created from the former province of Dauphine. Its region was reduced for two times in 1852 and in 1967. Isere is part of the region of Rhone-Alpes and is surrounded by the departements of Rhone, Ain, Savoie, Hautes-Alpes, Drome, Ardeche, and Loire.
