Auxerre




France, officially the French Republic, is a country whose metropolitan territory is located in Western Europe and comprises various overseas islands and territories which are located in other regions. Metropolitan France extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. At 674,843 square kilometers, France is the world's 40th-largest country after Myanmar. France is a member of The European Union and Paris is the capital of this nation. The sole official language of France is French. Since prehistoric times, France has been a crossroads of trade, migrations, and invasions.

Auxerre is a commune in the Bourgogne region of central France, between Paris and Dijon. It is the prefecture of the Yonne departement. It is a commercial and industrial centre, industries including food production, woodworking and batteries. It is also famous for the wine produced in the neighborhood, including the renowned Chablis.
 
Auxerre was a flourishing Gallo-Roman centre across one of the main roads of the area, the Via Agrippa and on the Yonne River. In the third century it became the seat of a bishop and a provincial capital of the Roman Empire. In the fifth century it received a Cathedral. In the late eleventh early twelfth century the existing communities were included inside a new line of walls built by the feudal Counts of Auxerre.
 
Burgeois activities accompanied the traditional land and wine cultivations starting from the twelfth century, and Auxerre developed into a commune with a Town Hall of its own. The city, which become part of France under King Louis XI, suffered during the hundred years' war and the wars of religion. In 1567 it was captured by the Huguenots, and much of the Catholic edifices were damaged. The medieval ramparts were demolished in the eighteenth century. In the nineteenth century numerous heavy infrastructures were built, including a railways station, a psychiatric hospital and the courts, and new quarters developed on the righ bank of the Yonne. In 1995 it was named town of art and history. Auxerre is known for its football club AJ Auxerre. It enjoys a very positive reputation with worldwide travelers.
