Annecy
France, officially the French Republic, is a country whose metropolitan territory is located in Western Europe and comprises various overseas islands and territories which are located in other regions. Metropolitan France extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. At 674,843 square kilometers, France is the world's 40th-largest country after Myanmar. France is a member of The European Union and Paris is the capital of this nation. The sole official language of France is French. Since prehistoric times, France has been a crossroads of trade, migrations, and invasions.
Annecy is a city in the Rhone-Alpes region of east central France, on the shores of Lake Annecy, 22 miles south of Geneva. Annecy is a commune in the Haute-Savoie department, in the Rhone-Alpes region. It is the capital of the departement. The metropolitan area of Annecy is organized into an agglomeration community which groups 13 communes. Annecy is the capital of three cantons are the Canton of Annecy-Centre is made up of a part of Annecy and has 15,344 inhabitants, the Canton of Annecy-Nord-Est is also made up of part of Annecy and counts 19,540 inhabitants and the largest canton is that of the Annecy-Nord-Est, which is formed from a part of Annecy and the communities of La Balme-de-Sillingy, Epagny, Choisy, Mesigny, Lovagny, Meythet, Metz-Tessy, Nonglard, Poisy, and Sallenioves Sillingy. Annecy is located between Geneva and Chambery. Thus its history was strongly influenced by these two towns between the 10th and the 19th century. Starting as the capital of the county of Geneva, after the demise of the counts of Geneva, it became integrated into the House of Savoie in 1401. In 1444, it was set up by the Princes of Savoie as the capital of a region covering the possessions of the Genevois, Faucigny and Beaufortain. With the advance of Calvinism in 1535, it became a center for the Counter-Reformation and the bishop's see of Geneva was transferred.
Annecy is a pleasant residence, and is home to a number of important places and monuments like Annecy Castle, Cathedral of Saint-Pierre, The rue Sainte-Claire, The church of Saint-Maurice, The European Gardens, and The Imperial Palace.
